# Wollongong AI Search Visibility: What the Evidence Shows

**AI search visibility cannot be proven by asking one chatbot once. Wollongong businesses need repeated local prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, measuring mentions, citations, persistence and factual accuracy. Current evidence shows recommendations vary materially between platforms, locations and repeated tests.** [1](#ref-1)

AI systems now influence how people compare local service providers, but visibility is more complicated than a business either appearing or disappearing. The same prompt can produce different businesses across repeated searches, while a strong Google Maps position does not automatically produce the same result in an AI-generated answer.

This research review examines what current platform documentation, large-scale studies and Creative Orbit's own search data can reliably tell Wollongong and Illawarra businesses. It also provides a repeatable measurement framework instead of relying on isolated screenshots or one-off chatbot tests.

Wollongong & Illawarra · Evidence review · Updated September 2026

  ## Important Research Qualification

The previous version of this article quoted an external claim that 88% of businesses were invisible to AI search. It also referred to observations from tests on Wollongong and Illawarra businesses. Those observations were useful diagnostically, but they did not constitute a controlled or representative Creative Orbit dataset.

**This article does not claim that a particular percentage of Wollongong businesses are invisible to AI.**

No statistically representative sample of Wollongong businesses has yet been tested under a published Creative Orbit methodology. The article should therefore be read as an evidence review and testing protocol, not a local prevalence study.

This distinction matters because AI recommendations are variable. A business that does not appear once may appear in a later run of the same prompt, while another business may appear frequently but with incorrect or incomplete information.

  ## What Current Evidence Shows

The strongest available local AI research shows that visibility is variable, platform-specific and geographically sensitive. A one-off answer is therefore not a reliable visibility benchmark.

### Recommendations change between tests

BrightLocal analysed 200,875 non-branded local prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. The study covered 1,342 business locations, repeated reports over 60 days, nine map points per location and approximately 1.9 million citations. [1](#ref-1)

Repeated searches showed only 20% to 33% average overlap between result sets. However, a business that appeared once returned in approximately 50% to 58% of subsequent attempts. This means AI recommendations are volatile, but visibility is not completely random. [1](#ref-1)

### Google Maps and AI are different

In the same study, Google Maps mentioned a tracked business in 66% of searches. The three AI surfaces mentioned the tracked business in only 32% to 38% of searches. ChatGPT also shared only about 19% to 20% of named businesses with Google's AI surfaces. [1](#ref-1)

These findings do not mean Google Business Profile optimisation has stopped mattering. They show that Maps rankings and AI recommendations are separate visibility measurements that should be tracked alongside one another.

### Location can change the answer

BrightLocal found that moving the test location within the same town changed which businesses were returned. The overlap between different map points was 36.2% for ChatGPT, 46.9% for Google AI Mode and 47.4% for Google AI Overviews. [1](#ref-1)

A Wollongong test should therefore record the search location. Results generated from Keiraville, Thirroul, Shellharbour or Sydney should not be treated as interchangeable.

### Business websites remain important

Of the 116,000 unique domains used as sources in BrightLocal's 2026 study, 93% were classified as business websites. Business websites produced 42% of the approximately 1.97 million citations analysed. [1](#ref-1)

That does not mean a website alone guarantees inclusion. Google Business Profiles, directories, review sites, Facebook, industry resources and local publications also contributed source information. Local AI visibility is an entity-wide problem, not simply an on-page SEO problem.

  ## How the Evidence Was Reviewed

This update prioritises official platform documentation, transparent first-party datasets and studies that disclose their samples and limitations. It distinguishes platform requirements from correlations, vendor recommendations and untested industry assumptions.

**Sources included in the review:**

- Google Search Central documentation covering AI Overviews, AI Mode, indexing, structured data and measurement.
- OpenAI documentation explaining OAI-SearchBot and the distinction between search crawling and model training.
- BrightLocal studies covering repeated local prompts, geographic variance, business mentions and citation sources.
- Pew Research Center browsing data measuring user behaviour when Google AI summaries appeared.
- Seer Interactive's 2026 analysis of 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion organic impressions.
- Orbit Media's analysis of AI-referred traffic across 97 B2B websites and 29 million visits.
- Creative Orbit's first-party Search Console analysis of AI-related impressions and clicks.

### What this review can establish

- Local AI recommendations vary between platforms and repeated searches.
- A business can rank in Maps without appearing consistently in AI-generated recommendations.
- Business websites, profiles, directories and third-party mentions all contribute source information.
- AI visibility must be measured repeatedly rather than inferred from one result.

### What this review cannot establish

- The percentage of Wollongong businesses currently visible in AI recommendations.
- A universal ranking factor that guarantees ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI inclusion.
- That a citation directly causes higher click-through or conversion rates.
- That results from United States studies apply at the same rate to Australian regional markets.

  ## Is Local AI Search Significant?

AI-assisted local discovery is significant enough to measure, but current studies should not be converted into unsupported predictions about Wollongong consumer behaviour.

### Consumer adoption is growing

BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 45% of surveyed consumers had used generative AI for local business recommendations. The study used a representative panel of 1,002 United States adults, so it demonstrates meaningful adoption but does not provide an Australian or Wollongong usage rate. [2](#ref-2)

### Visibility does not guarantee traffic

Pew Research Center analysed the browsing behaviour of more than 900 United States adults and 68,879 Google searches. Users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% where no AI summary appeared. Only 1% of visits produced a click on a citation inside the AI summary. [3](#ref-3)

The practical implication is that an AI mention can create brand exposure without creating a measurable website visit. AI visibility reporting must therefore separate mentions, citations, referral traffic and conversions.

### Cited brands can still gain clicks

Seer Interactive's April 2026 analysis covered 53 brands, 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion organic impressions. Within informational queries that triggered an AI Overview, cited brands generated approximately 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited brands on the same type of result. [4](#ref-4)

Seer expressly cautioned that the relationship is correlational. Higher-authority brands may be more likely both to earn citations and clicks, so the study does not prove that the citation alone caused the improvement. [4](#ref-4)

### AI referrals may be better qualified

Orbit Media analysed 97 B2B lead-generation websites and 29 million visits over the year ending June 2026. AI-referred visitors converted into leads at three times the aggregate rate of other organic sources, but AI platforms produced only 0.5% of total visits. [5](#ref-5)

This is a useful B2B benchmark, not a promise for every local business. Industry, offer, attribution configuration and the definition of a conversion can materially change the result.
