Wollongong AI Search Visibility: What the Evidence Shows
AI search visibility cannot be proven by asking one chatbot once. Wollongong businesses need repeated local prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, measuring mentions, citations, persistence and factual accuracy. Current evidence shows recommendations vary materially between platforms, locations and repeated tests. 1
AI systems now influence how people compare local service providers, but visibility is more complicated than a business either appearing or disappearing. The same prompt can produce different businesses across repeated searches, while a strong Google Maps position does not automatically produce the same result in an AI-generated answer.
This research review examines what current platform documentation, large-scale studies and Creative Orbit's own search data can reliably tell Wollongong and Illawarra businesses. It also provides a repeatable measurement framework instead of relying on isolated screenshots or one-off chatbot tests.
Important Research Qualification
The previous version of this article quoted an external claim that 88% of businesses were invisible to AI search. It also referred to observations from tests on Wollongong and Illawarra businesses. Those observations were useful diagnostically, but they did not constitute a controlled or representative Creative Orbit dataset.
This article does not claim that a particular percentage of Wollongong businesses are invisible to AI.
No statistically representative sample of Wollongong businesses has yet been tested under a published Creative Orbit methodology. The article should therefore be read as an evidence review and testing protocol, not a local prevalence study.
This distinction matters because AI recommendations are variable. A business that does not appear once may appear in a later run of the same prompt, while another business may appear frequently but with incorrect or incomplete information.
What Current Evidence Shows
The strongest available local AI research shows that visibility is variable, platform-specific and geographically sensitive. A one-off answer is therefore not a reliable visibility benchmark.
Recommendations change between tests
BrightLocal analysed 200,875 non-branded local prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. The study covered 1,342 business locations, repeated reports over 60 days, nine map points per location and approximately 1.9 million citations. 1
Repeated searches showed only 20% to 33% average overlap between result sets. However, a business that appeared once returned in approximately 50% to 58% of subsequent attempts. This means AI recommendations are volatile, but visibility is not completely random. 1
Google Maps and AI are different
In the same study, Google Maps mentioned a tracked business in 66% of searches. The three AI surfaces mentioned the tracked business in only 32% to 38% of searches. ChatGPT also shared only about 19% to 20% of named businesses with Google's AI surfaces. 1
These findings do not mean Google Business Profile optimisation has stopped mattering. They show that Maps rankings and AI recommendations are separate visibility measurements that should be tracked alongside one another.
Location can change the answer
BrightLocal found that moving the test location within the same town changed which businesses were returned. The overlap between different map points was 36.2% for ChatGPT, 46.9% for Google AI Mode and 47.4% for Google AI Overviews. 1
A Wollongong test should therefore record the search location. Results generated from Keiraville, Thirroul, Shellharbour or Sydney should not be treated as interchangeable.
Business websites remain important
Of the 116,000 unique domains used as sources in BrightLocal's 2026 study, 93% were classified as business websites. Business websites produced 42% of the approximately 1.97 million citations analysed. 1
That does not mean a website alone guarantees inclusion. Google Business Profiles, directories, review sites, Facebook, industry resources and local publications also contributed source information. Local AI visibility is an entity-wide problem, not simply an on-page SEO problem.
How the Evidence Was Reviewed
This update prioritises official platform documentation, transparent first-party datasets and studies that disclose their samples and limitations. It distinguishes platform requirements from correlations, vendor recommendations and untested industry assumptions.
Sources included in the review:
- Google Search Central documentation covering AI Overviews, AI Mode, indexing, structured data and measurement.
- OpenAI documentation explaining OAI-SearchBot and the distinction between search crawling and model training.
- BrightLocal studies covering repeated local prompts, geographic variance, business mentions and citation sources.
- Pew Research Center browsing data measuring user behaviour when Google AI summaries appeared.
- Seer Interactive's 2026 analysis of 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion organic impressions.
- Orbit Media's analysis of AI-referred traffic across 97 B2B websites and 29 million visits.
- Creative Orbit's first-party Search Console analysis of AI-related impressions and clicks.
What this review can establish
- Local AI recommendations vary between platforms and repeated searches.
- A business can rank in Maps without appearing consistently in AI-generated recommendations.
- Business websites, profiles, directories and third-party mentions all contribute source information.
- AI visibility must be measured repeatedly rather than inferred from one result.
What this review cannot establish
- The percentage of Wollongong businesses currently visible in AI recommendations.
- A universal ranking factor that guarantees ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI inclusion.
- That a citation directly causes higher click-through or conversion rates.
- That results from United States studies apply at the same rate to Australian regional markets.
Is Local AI Search Significant?
AI-assisted local discovery is significant enough to measure, but current studies should not be converted into unsupported predictions about Wollongong consumer behaviour.
Consumer adoption is growing
BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 45% of surveyed consumers had used generative AI for local business recommendations. The study used a representative panel of 1,002 United States adults, so it demonstrates meaningful adoption but does not provide an Australian or Wollongong usage rate. 2
Visibility does not guarantee traffic
Pew Research Center analysed the browsing behaviour of more than 900 United States adults and 68,879 Google searches. Users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% where no AI summary appeared. Only 1% of visits produced a click on a citation inside the AI summary. 3
The practical implication is that an AI mention can create brand exposure without creating a measurable website visit. AI visibility reporting must therefore separate mentions, citations, referral traffic and conversions.
Cited brands can still gain clicks
Seer Interactive's April 2026 analysis covered 53 brands, 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion organic impressions. Within informational queries that triggered an AI Overview, cited brands generated approximately 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited brands on the same type of result. 4
Seer expressly cautioned that the relationship is correlational. Higher-authority brands may be more likely both to earn citations and clicks, so the study does not prove that the citation alone caused the improvement. 4
AI referrals may be better qualified
Orbit Media analysed 97 B2B lead-generation websites and 29 million visits over the year ending June 2026. AI-referred visitors converted into leads at three times the aggregate rate of other organic sources, but AI platforms produced only 0.5% of total visits. 5
This is a useful B2B benchmark, not a promise for every local business. Industry, offer, attribution configuration and the definition of a conversion can materially change the result.
The MAPS Measurement Framework
Creative Orbit's MAPS framework separates four dimensions that are commonly collapsed into the vague phrase “AI visibility”. Together, they provide a more defensible baseline than a single visibility score.
M: Mention Frequency
The percentage of valid test responses that name the business. A business appearing in one of twelve tests has materially different visibility from one appearing in ten.
A: Attribution Rate
The percentage of responses that link to or cite the business's own website. A name-only mention and a verifiable website citation should be recorded separately.
P: Persistence
How consistently the business returns when the same prompt is repeated across different sessions, dates and locations. Persistence helps distinguish recurring visibility from an isolated appearance.
S: Source Accuracy
Whether the answer uses reliable sources and states the business name, location, services, contact details and credentials correctly.
A strong result requires more than being named.
A business can have a high mention frequency but low attribution if AI systems repeatedly name it without citing its website. It can also have high visibility but poor accuracy if the answers use old addresses, incorrect services or unreliable third-party descriptions.
A Reproducible Local Test
A useful Wollongong AI visibility benchmark should use fixed prompts, repeated tests, recorded conditions and consistent scoring. Changing the prompt or judging one answer by eye does not produce comparable evidence.
Choose commercial prompt groups
Create prompts covering four customer-intent groups. Replace the example service with the business's actual service and retain the same wording during each test cycle.
- Discovery: “Which companies provide commercial photography in Wollongong?”
- Comparison: “Compare reputable commercial photographers serving Wollongong and the Illawarra.”
- Recommendation: “Who would you recommend for commercial photography in Wollongong, and why?”
- Transactional: “I need a commercial photographer in Wollongong. Which providers should I contact?”
Test multiple platforms
Run the fixed prompts across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode or an eligible Google AI Overview, Gemini and Perplexity. Record the platform, account state, model or mode, date, apparent location and whether live web search was used.
Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode can use different models and techniques, so their responses and supporting links may differ. An AI Overview also will not appear for every Google search. 6
Repeat every prompt
Run each prompt at least three times in separate sessions. A more reliable benchmark repeats the tests on different days and, where geographic coverage matters, from multiple points across the service area.
Repetition is essential because large-scale local testing found substantial differences between repeated answers and between search locations. 1
Capture the same fields
- Was the business named?
- What position did it hold in the recommendation?
- Was the business website cited or linked?
- Which third-party sources were cited?
- Were the business facts correct?
- Which competitors appeared?
- Did the answer include a clear reason for the recommendation?
Recalculate monthly
Monthly measurement is usually more useful than daily checking because AI answers are volatile. Use the same prompt set and test conditions, then compare mention frequency, attribution, persistence, accuracy and competitor share of voice.

What Actually Supports Visibility?
Crawlable and indexable pages
Google requires a page to be indexed and eligible to appear with a search snippet before it can be considered as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google says there are no additional technical requirements beyond its established search requirements. 6
OpenAI separately identifies OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT search results. Site owners can allow OAI-SearchBot for search while independently blocking GPTBot from model-training use. 7
Consistent entity information
The business name, address, telephone number, service areas, categories and core services should agree across the website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, directories and prominent third-party mentions.
Google specifically recommends keeping Business Profile information current, while local AI citation research shows that AI systems draw from a mixture of business websites, profiles, directories and publishers. 6 1
Useful first-party evidence
Service pages should explain what the business does, where it operates, who performs the work and what evidence supports its claims. Relevant case studies, original photographs, named authors, project details and locally specific examples give both customers and retrieval systems clearer evidence.
Accurate structured data
Structured data can clarify machine-readable business and page facts, but it is not a guaranteed AI citation mechanism. Google states that no special schema type or additional AI markup is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. 6
The practical requirement is to use supported schema accurately and keep it consistent with the visible page. The detailed technical position is covered in Schema for AI Search .
Third-party corroboration
A website is only one part of a local entity's evidence. Reviews, trusted directories, local media, industry associations and relevant publisher mentions can corroborate a business's location, services, reputation and expertise.
The priority is not to appear everywhere. It is to maintain accurate information in sources that customers and AI platforms use for the business's location and industry.
What Is Not a Shortcut?
A single chatbot test
One answer is an observation, not a benchmark. It cannot establish persistent visibility because recommendation sets change between repeated tests.
Schema alone
Schema can reduce ambiguity, but adding more markup does not guarantee that an AI system will mention, cite or recommend the business. Content, crawlability, authority, corroboration and relevance still matter.
An llms.txt file
An llms.txt file is a proposed convention, not a documented visibility requirement. Google states that new AI text files or machine-readable files are not needed for its generative search features. 6
A business may test an llms.txt file as an experimental publishing aid, but it should not take priority over indexation, crawler access, accurate entity information and useful website content.
Google Maps rankings alone
Strong Maps visibility is valuable but does not prove that the same business will appear across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode or AI Overviews. Traditional SEO and local AI measurement should be treated as connected but distinct layers.
Creative Orbit's First-Party Signal
Creative Orbit's AI SEO Paradox analysed 90 days of Google Search Console data covering more than 500 AI-related queries. Those queries produced 21,919 impressions and 41 clicks, an overall click-through rate of 0.187%. 8
That dataset demonstrates how AI-related visibility can generate substantial search exposure without proportionate click traffic. It does not estimate the percentage of Wollongong businesses appearing in AI recommendations, and it should not be presented as a local-business census.
The practical connection is measurement. Search impressions, website clicks, AI mentions, source citations, branded searches and qualified enquiries each describe a different stage of visibility. No single metric should be used as the complete result.
Recommended Action Order
- Establish the baseline: run fixed prompts across the four platforms and calculate MAPS metrics.
- Verify access: confirm indexation, Googlebot access, OAI-SearchBot access and server-readable content.
- Correct entity facts: reconcile the website, business profiles, directories and schema.
- Strengthen core pages: add clear services, service areas, evidence, authorship and direct customer answers.
- Improve corroboration: build legitimate reviews, local mentions, relevant directory listings and industry references.
- Retest consistently: repeat the original prompt set after changes and compare frequency, citations, persistence and accuracy.
Businesses that need a technical and content implementation programme can review Creative Orbit's AI SEO and answer-engine optimisation service.
Research Limitations
- No representative Creative Orbit sample of Wollongong businesses has yet been published.
- The large local-search datasets cited here are not specific to Wollongong or the Australian market.
- AI responses can change with location, account history, model version, prompt wording, live-search mode and test date.
- Platforms expose different levels of information about their recommendation and citation systems.
- Correlation between citations and clicks does not establish causation.
- GA4 may classify some AI-generated search visits as organic or direct, limiting referral attribution.
These limitations do not make AI visibility unmeasurable. They mean the measurement must be transparent, repeated and interpreted conservatively.
AI Visibility Questions
What is AI search visibility for a Wollongong business?
AI search visibility is how often a business is accurately named, cited or recommended when people use AI-assisted platforms to research relevant services in Wollongong and the Illawarra.
Can one ChatGPT search prove that a business is invisible?
No. AI recommendations vary between repeated prompts, sessions, locations and platforms. A defensible benchmark requires fixed prompts, multiple runs and consistent scoring.
Does ranking in Google Maps guarantee AI visibility?
No. Google Maps visibility and AI recommendation visibility overlap, but they are not identical. A business should measure both rather than assuming one guarantees the other.
Is special schema required for AI search?
No. Accurate structured data can clarify business and page information, but Google does not require special AI schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Does an llms.txt file improve AI visibility?
There is no dependable evidence that an llms.txt file improves rankings or citations. It is an optional proposed convention and is not required for Google's generative search features.
How often should AI search visibility be tested?
Monthly testing is suitable for most local businesses. Use the same prompts, platforms and scoring method so changes can be compared consistently over time.
