Web design for Wollongong, Illawarra and South Coast businesses that need a website to do more than look good. Every build starts with a Screaming Frog audit, loads fast on mobile, is structured for Google and AI search, and is built in WordPress or Joomla by a senior developer with 20 years of hands-on CMS experience.

Web Design Wollongong: Fast, Search-Ready Websites That Win Enquiries

Audit-first websites in WordPress or Joomla, designed and built directly by Simon Bayliss for Illawarra businesses that need more calls, quote requests and bookings, not just a nicer homepage.

Last reviewed: October 2026. This update covers the current Core Web Vitals thresholds, Joomla 6, and how AI search tools read websites.

What does effective web design look like for a Wollongong business in 2026? It means a website that loads quickly on a phone, tells local customers exactly what you do and where you work, and makes it easy for them to call, book or ask for a quote. It is built on clean, crawlable HTML so Google, the Local Map Pack and AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity can understand it and recommend it.

Most Illawarra business websites look fine on a laptop. The problem is what happens everywhere else: slow mobile load times, thin service pages, no clear next step, and content that search engines and AI tools struggle to read. I fix that at the foundation, before a single layout decision is made.

Why Do So Many Wollongong Websites Look Fine but Bring In So Few Enquiries?

Most underperforming small business websites fail for three reasons: they were designed theme-first rather than search-first, they are slow on mobile, and they give visitors no clear reason or route to get in touch. None of these are visible in a design mock-up, which is why they so often survive into the finished site.

The patterns I see most often in Illawarra website audits:
  • Theme-first builds. An attractive template with one thin "Services" page, so the site has nothing specific to rank for each service or service area.
  • Slow mobile performance. Heavy page builders, oversized images and too many plugins push load times well past Google's "good" thresholds.
  • Content hidden from AI crawlers. Text and links that only appear after JavaScript runs are invisible to the crawlers behind ChatGPT and Claude, which do not execute JavaScript.1
  • No clear next step. Contact details buried in the footer, generic "Contact us" buttons and forms that ask for too much, too early.
  • Fragile, hard-to-edit sites. Every small change needs a developer, so the site falls behind as services, prices and staff change.
  • Redesigns that lose rankings. New sites launched without a redirect map, wiping out years of search history overnight.

A new design alone does not fix any of this. The fix is a build process that starts with data about how your current site performs and how your customers search, then designs around it.

What Is Included in a Creative Orbit Website Build?

Four foundations built into every project, whatever the size or platform.

1

Search-Ready Site Structure

Your site structure decides what you can rank for. Before design starts, I map one clear page to each core service and each important service area, based on what people actually search across the Illawarra.

  • Screaming Frog crawl of your current site
  • Keyword and search-intent mapping per page
  • Clean URLs, headings and internal linking
  • Redirect map so existing rankings carry over
2

Speed & Core Web Vitals

Google measures real-world page experience with Core Web Vitals. A "good" result means the main content loads within 2.5 seconds (LCP), the page responds to taps within 200 milliseconds (INP) and the layout does not jump around (CLS of 0.1 or less).2

  • Lightweight templates, no bloated page builders
  • Compressed, correctly sized modern images
  • Minimal, vetted extensions and plugins
  • Caching and performance tuning at launch
3

Conversion Design & Clear Copy

Traffic only matters if visitors take the next step. Every page is designed around a single job: get the right customer to call, book or request a quote, especially on a phone.

  • Mobile-first layouts with tap-to-call
  • Plain-English service copy written for local buyers
  • Short, focused enquiry and booking forms
  • Real photography instead of stock imagery
4

AI-Ready Content & Schema

AI assistants increasingly shortlist local businesses for people. They can only recommend what they can read, so key content is delivered in the server-rendered HTML, supported by structured data that spells out who you are, what you do and where.

  • Server-rendered content and navigation
  • LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ schema
  • Question-led headings with direct answers
  • Clear author, business and location details

Web design and SEO are one job, not two

Every build includes the technical and on-page SEO foundations above. If you also want ongoing ranking work, the site plugs straight into my SEO Wollongong and AI search optimisation services, with nothing to rebuild.

WordPress or Joomla: Which CMS Is Right for Your Business?

For most small business brochure sites, WordPress is a sound choice. Joomla is often the better fit when a site needs multiple languages, detailed user permissions or a large, structured content library without relying on dozens of plugins. The right answer depends on what the site has to do, who will edit it, and how it will be maintained.

I started building in WordPress and have specialised in Joomla for most of the last 20 years, so I build in both and recommend whichever fits your business, not the one I happen to prefer.

WordPress is usually best when…

  • ✅ You want the widest choice of themes, plugins and developers
  • ✅ Your site is mainly service pages, a blog and enquiry forms
  • ✅ Your team already knows the WordPress editor
  • ✅ You need a specific plugin-based feature (bookings, memberships, WooCommerce)
  • ⚠️ Plugins need active management: in 2024, 96% of new WordPress vulnerabilities were found in plugins, not WordPress core3

Joomla is often better when…

  • ✅ You need a multilingual site without paid add-ons (it is built into core)
  • ✅ Different staff need different editing and publishing permissions
  • ✅ You manage large volumes of structured content, categories or custom fields
  • ✅ You want more built into core and fewer third-party plugins to maintain
  • ✅ Automatic core updates are now available in Joomla 6, released October 20254

For context: WordPress runs about 40% of all websites and holds about 59% of the content management system market. Joomla runs about 1% of websites.5 Popularity makes WordPress easy to hire for. It does not make it the right tool for every project. For a product-only online store, I will also tell you honestly when a hosted platform such as Shopify makes more sense.

Either way, the things that decide whether your site ranks and converts are the same: structure, speed, content and maintenance. The platform matters far less than how it is built and looked after.

How Does the Website Build Process Work?

Five steps from audit to launch, each with outputs you can see and sign off.

1

Audit & Local Competitor Scan

I crawl your current site with Screaming Frog, review Search Console and Analytics where available, and look at how you and your competitors appear in Google, the Map Pack and AI answers for your main services.

2

Site Plan & Platform Choice

You get a page plan, URL structure and internal linking map, plus a clear recommendation on WordPress, Joomla or another platform, with the reasons.

3

Design With Real Copy

You review layouts with draft copy and calls to action in place, not lorem ipsum, so we can refine wording, flow and positioning before development starts.

4

Build, Optimise & Pre-Launch Crawl

I develop the site, add schema and on-page SEO, set up redirects and analytics, then re-crawl the staging site to catch broken links, missing metadata and speed issues before launch.

5

Launch, Measure & Improve

After launch, I monitor indexing, rankings, Core Web Vitals and enquiries, then refine copy, calls to action and internal links as real data comes in.

I will. Creative Orbit is a specialist practice, so the person you talk to is the person who audits, designs, builds and maintains your site. There are no account managers, junior handovers or offshore subcontractors in between.

Web Design Wollongong: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a website cost in Wollongong? ▼

Creative Orbit website projects start from $1,900 (ex-GST). The final price depends on the number of pages, features such as bookings or e-commerce, whether you are migrating an existing site, and how much copy and photography you need. You get a fixed quote after the initial audit, so there are no surprises.

How long does it typically take to build a new website? ▼

A typical small business website takes around 3 to 5 weeks from audit to launch. Larger sites, e-commerce stores and migrations take longer. The biggest variable is usually content: having copy, photos and decisions ready keeps the project moving.

Should I choose WordPress or Joomla for my website? ▼

WordPress suits most simple service websites and gives you the biggest pool of plugins and developers. Joomla is often the better choice for multilingual sites, sites with several editors needing different permissions, or large structured content libraries. I build in both and will recommend one based on your requirements.

Will a new website hurt my Google rankings? ▼

Yes, a redesign can hurt your Google rankings if it is launched without planning, which is one of the most common causes of sudden traffic drops. I crawl your existing site first, map every important URL to its new equivalent, set up 301 redirects and re-crawl after launch so your existing search visibility carries over to the new site.

Can I update the website myself? ▼

Yes. Whether the site is built in WordPress or Joomla, you can edit text, images, services and blog posts yourself. I set up the editor so it is hard to break the layout and give you a walkthrough at handover.

What does "AI-ready" web design actually mean? ▼

It means building the site so AI assistants can read and trust it: important content in plain server-rendered HTML rather than hidden behind JavaScript, clear question-led headings with direct answers, accurate structured data, and consistent business details. It does not mean AI-written content. Copy is written by a person, about your business.

Do you work with businesses outside Wollongong? ▼

Yes. I build websites for businesses in Shellharbour, Kiama, Nowra and the Shoalhaven, the Southern Highlands and Sydney, as well as clients elsewhere in Australia. Most of the process works well remotely, with in-person meetings around the Illawarra when they are useful.

Can you work with my existing developer or improve my current site instead? ▼

Yes. Some businesses do not need a rebuild. I can audit and fix the current site, or provide the structure, SEO requirements and content plan for your in-house team or preferred developer to implement.
